What is a driver license?

Answer

A permit to drive vehicles

Explanation

A driver licence (also spelled driver's licence) is the official document that authorises a person to drive a motor vehicle on Australian public roads. Driver licensing is a state and territory responsibility, with each jurisdiction issuing its own licences through its road transport authority.

The state and territory road authorities are Transport for NSW (NSW), VicRoads (Victoria), the Department of Transport and Main Roads (Queensland), the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (South Australia), the Department of Transport (Western Australia), Service Tasmania, Access Canberra (ACT), and the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (Northern Territory). Australian driver licences are mutually recognised across all jurisdictions, so a holder of a valid NSW licence can drive in Victoria without exchanging it.

Most Australian licensing systems use a graduated model with several stages. Learner permit (L plates) for the first stage, after passing a computer-based knowledge test, allowing driving only with a fully licensed supervisor. Provisional 1 (red P plates in most states) after passing a practical driving test, with restrictions on speed, passenger numbers, and vehicle types. Provisional 2 (green P plates) after a further period, with reduced restrictions. Full licence after satisfying the minimum required time and any age requirements, usually around three years total at the earliest.

Holders of overseas driver licences can drive in Australia for limited periods on the foreign licence, particularly tourists. Permanent residents and citizens generally must convert their overseas licence to an Australian one within three months of becoming a resident. Some countries have direct exchange agreements (no test required for an experienced driver), including the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, France, Germany, Japan, and South Korea. Drivers from countries without an agreement must take the relevant knowledge and practical tests. Driver licences are now accepted as primary identification documents under the 100 points of ID system, with digital driver licences available in several states through state-based mobile apps.

Why this matters for your test

A driver licence is the most-used identification document in Australia and a practical necessity in most parts of the country, and recognising the graduated system and conversion rules helps new citizens get on the road.
