What is Services Australia?

Answer

Government agency delivering Centrelink payments and services

Explanation

Services Australia is the federal agency that delivers Medicare, Centrelink, Child Support, and a range of other government payments and services to Australians. It was established in its current form on 1 February 2020 as a stand-alone executive agency in the Social Services portfolio, taking over the functions of the previous Department of Human Services.

The agency operates under three main brands that customers see directly. Medicare delivers payments for doctors' visits, public hospital care, and prescriptions, and issues Medicare cards. Centrelink delivers income-support payments including the Age Pension, JobSeeker Payment, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment, Family Tax Benefit, and Youth Allowance, plus ancillary services like the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Programme. Child Support administers the transfer of child support payments between separated parents under the Child Support Scheme.

Most interactions with Services Australia happen through myGov, the federal online portal that links a user to their Medicare, Centrelink, ATO, and several other federal agencies through a single sign-in. The Express Plus Centrelink, Express Plus Medicare, and Express Plus Child Support mobile apps handle the most common transactions including reporting income, claiming Medicare rebates, and requesting payment summaries. Customer service centres operate in most major shopping centres and town centres, and the agency runs phone lines for each major service: Medicare on 132 011, Centrelink lines for specific payments, and Child Support on 131 272.

Services Australia has a customer base of about 26 million Australians (almost the entire population, since most people use Medicare), more than 30,000 staff in offices across the country, and an annual budget of more than 5 billion dollars for operations alongside the much larger payment outlays it administers on behalf of policy departments. Following the 2023 Robodebt Royal Commission, the agency has been rebuilding trust through a programme of reforms including greater human review of decisions, improved complaints handling, expanded staff training, and stronger co-design of services with people who have lived experience of welfare and disability systems.

Why this matters for your test

Services Australia is the agency every Australian deals with for Medicare and Centrelink, and recognising it as the umbrella over all three brands plus myGov gives new citizens a clear map of the federal customer-services system.
