What is sporting culture?

Answer

Widespread participation and interest in sports

Explanation

Sporting culture in Australia is the dense network of professional leagues, community clubs, weekend competitions, and big-event spectator gatherings that organise much of Australian social life. About 13.4 million Australians, more than half the population, participated in some form of organised sport or physical activity in 2024 according to the Australian Sports Commission.

The two most-watched winter sports are the Australian Football League (AFL), based on Australian rules football and dominant in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, and the National Rugby League (NRL), dominant in New South Wales and Queensland. The AFL grand final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in late September draws crowds of about 100,000 and is the largest live-attendance club sporting event in the country. The State of Origin rugby league series between New South Wales and Queensland, played each winter, attracts television audiences in the millions.

Cricket is the dominant summer sport. The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Sydney Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground in early January, and the Big Bash League domestic Twenty20 competition fill the cricket calendar. The Australian men's and women's teams compete for the Ashes against England, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, and the Frank Worrell Trophy against the West Indies. Test cricketers including Don Bradman, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, and Ellyse Perry are among the country's most recognised athletes.

Beyond the four major football and cricket codes, Australia has strong national presence in swimming, tennis (the Australian Open in January), surfing, rugby union (the Wallabies), football (the Socceroos and Matildas), netball, and athletics. The country has hosted the Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000), and Brisbane will host the games in 2032. Almost every Australian community has at least one sporting club, often multiple, and joining one is among the easiest paths to feeling at home as a new citizen.

Why this matters for your test

Sport is the most participated and most watched communal activity in Australia, and a basic familiarity with the major codes is one of the quickest routes to belonging in a workplace or neighbourhood.
