TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education and is the public network of Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions in Australia. TAFE colleges deliver nationally recognised qualifications from Certificate I through to Advanced Diploma and Bachelor degrees in some applied fields, primarily for adults moving into the workforce or upgrading skills.
Each state and territory runs its own TAFE network. TAFE NSW is the largest, with about 130 campuses across New South Wales. Other major networks include TAFE Queensland, TAFE Victoria (operating through Bendigo Kangan, Box Hill, Chisholm, Federation, and other regional and metropolitan TAFEs), TAFE SA, North Metropolitan TAFE and South Metropolitan TAFE in Western Australia, TasTAFE in Tasmania, the Canberra Institute of Technology, and Charles Darwin University TAFE in the Northern Territory. About 1.4 million students study at TAFE in any given year.
TAFE qualifications are aligned with the Australian Qualifications Framework and recognised nationally. Common fields include trades (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, automotive), hospitality, business administration, early childhood education, nursing and aged care, information technology, agriculture, and horticulture. Apprenticeships and traineeships, in which students combine paid work with study, are a major delivery model, with about 365,000 Australian apprentices and trainees in training as of 2024.
Government funding for VET has been reformed under the National Skills Agreement signed in October 2023 between the federal government and the states. The agreement provides a five-year funding framework with priority sectors including the care economy, clean energy, construction, and digital. Fee-free TAFE places, introduced in 2023, have provided more than 600,000 fully subsidised training places in priority skill areas. Students who do pay fees can usually access VET Student Loans, a government loan programme similar to HECS-HELP that lets students defer fees for approved Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses.
