Confederation refers to the joining of four British colonies in 1867 to form the Dominion of Canada.
Explanation
On July 1, 1867, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick united to create Canada through the British North America Act. This act established a federal system of government with power divided between the central government and provincial governments. Confederation Day, celebrated on July 1st, is now called Canada Day and is the national holiday marking Canada's founding.
