What is Brookfield Asset Management?

Answer

A Toronto-headquartered alternative asset manager with about US$1 trillion under management across infrastructure, real estate, renewable energy, private equity, and credit.

Explanation

Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. is a Toronto-headquartered alternative asset manager with approximately US$1 trillion in assets under management across infrastructure, real estate, renewable energy, private equity, and credit. The company traces its roots to the Belgian-owned Brazilian Traction, Light and Power Company, established in 1899 to electrify São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. After successive transformations the company became Brascan in 1969 and adopted the current Brookfield name in 2005.

Brookfield operates through several listed subsidiaries and private funds. Brookfield Infrastructure Partners owns ports, toll roads, pipelines, communications towers, and utility networks worldwide. Brookfield Renewable Partners owns one of the largest private hydroelectric portfolios in the world plus wind and solar assets. Brookfield Property Partners owns trophy office and retail real estate (was taken private in 2021). Brookfield Business Partners holds private-equity investments. Oaktree Capital Management, the Los Angeles-based credit specialist, joined the Brookfield group in 2019.

The company's investments in Canada include the LNG Canada terminal in Kitimat (through co-ownership with Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi, and Korea Gas), majority stakes in TerraForm Power and Saputo Inc., real estate holdings including Brookfield Place in Toronto and Calgary, and the Coastal GasLink pipeline (in partnership with TC Energy and KKR). Brookfield is also a major investor in Australian, European, U.S., and South American infrastructure.

Bruce Flatt has served as CEO since 2002 and is one of Canada's best-known executives. The Brookfield family of companies is publicly traded on the Toronto and New York Stock Exchanges. Mark Carney, the former Bank of Canada and Bank of England Governor, joined Brookfield as chair of transition investing in 2020 before leaving in early 2025 to enter Canadian federal politics. Brookfield's Bermuda-domiciled corporate structure, executive compensation, and tax planning have drawn scrutiny from Canadian and international regulators.
