Citizenship

Definition

The status of being a legally recognised member of a country, with associated rights, duties, and privileges.

Explanation

Citizenship can be acquired by birth (either by being born in the country or to citizen parents) or through the process of naturalization. Citizens typically have the right to vote, hold public office, and carry a national passport. In return, citizens have responsibilities including obeying the law, paying taxes, and in some countries, serving on juries or performing military service. Citizenship grants full legal protection under the country's laws and the right to live and work there permanently without restrictions.

Why this matters for your test

Understanding what citizenship means, how it is obtained, and the rights and responsibilities it carries is the foundation of every citizenship test.
