Democracy is the foundation of governance in most Western nations. In a representative democracy, citizens vote for officials who make decisions on their behalf. Key democratic principles include free and fair elections, majority rule with minority rights, freedom of expression, and the rule of law. Different countries practise democracy in different ways: the US has a presidential system, the UK a parliamentary monarchy, Canada a parliamentary democracy, and Australia a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system.
