Executive

Definition

The branch of government responsible for implementing and enforcing laws.

Explanation

The executive branch carries out the laws passed by the legislature. In the US, the President heads the executive branch. In the UK, the Prime Minister leads the government and the executive. In Canada, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet form the executive. In Australia, the Prime Minister and Cabinet exercise executive power. While the head of state varies (a president in the US, a monarch in the UK, Canada, and Australia), the head of government is the chief executive who manages the day-to-day running of the country.
