Freedom of Religion

Definition

The right to practise any religion or no religion, without government interference or compulsion.

Explanation

Freedom of religion protects an individual's right to hold any religious belief, change their religion, or have no religion at all. In the US, the First Amendment prohibits the government from establishing a religion or restricting the free exercise of religion. In the UK, the Human Rights Act protects freedom of thought, conscience, and religion. In Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of conscience and religion. In Australia, Section 116 of the Constitution prohibits the Commonwealth from establishing any religion or imposing religious tests for public office.
