Definition

A policy or approach that recognises and supports the presence of diverse cultural and ethnic groups within a society.

Explanation

Multiculturalism acknowledges that citizens come from many different backgrounds and that this diversity strengthens society. Canada was the first country in the world to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy in 1971, enshrined in the Canadian Multiculturalism Act of 1988. Australia adopted a policy of multiculturalism in the 1970s, replacing the earlier White Australia policy. The UK promotes community cohesion and equality. In the US, the concept of a melting pot or cultural mosaic reflects the diverse origins of its population.
