Taxes
Definition
Mandatory financial contributions levied by the government on income, property, goods, and services to fund public services.
Explanation
Paying taxes is a fundamental responsibility of citizens and residents. Tax revenue funds essential public services including healthcare, education, defence, infrastructure, and social welfare programmes. Different countries have different tax systems: the US uses a federal and state income tax system, the UK uses income tax and National Insurance, Canada has federal and provincial income taxes, and Australia has a federal income tax system. All countries also collect indirect taxes on goods and services. Filing accurate tax returns by the required deadline is a legal obligation.
Why this matters for your test
Paying taxes is listed as a responsibility of citizenship in all four countries. US test takers should know the deadline for filing federal tax returns (April 15).
