What are the main steps in the naturalization process?
After filing Form N-400, the typical steps are: biometrics appointment (2 to 4 weeks after filing), interview scheduling (varies by field office), the naturalization interview and civics test, and finally the oath ceremony. Some applicants receive same-day oath ceremonies after their interview.
Can I speed up my application?
While you cannot pay to expedite a standard naturalization application, you can avoid delays by ensuring your application is complete, responding quickly to any Requests for Evidence (RFE), and being well prepared for your interview. Filing online rather than by mail can also save a few weeks.
What happens if my application takes longer than expected?
If your case is outside normal processing times, you can submit a case inquiry through the USCIS website or contact their customer service centre. You may also be able to request an expedite in certain circumstances, such as severe financial loss or urgent humanitarian reasons.
Does the civics test affect the timeline?
Not directly. The civics test happens during your interview appointment. However, if you fail the civics test, you will be given one more opportunity to retake it within 60 to 90 days, which adds time to your overall process.
